Megan Trainor gives career advice and spills about her success in Hollywood at the ASCAP Music Expo
She talked about her first hit song "All about that Bass" citing it as the song that changed her life and brought her from a writer behind the scenes to an artist front and center.
She said, "I had the song, you might have yours your number one smash right now in your pocket and you have no idea. That's the scariest part about this job. But also the most rewarding...I remember bass I wrote that being like, no one is ever going to sing this but, screw it let;'s write it anyways...I remember thinking I didn't look the part you know I would never be a Rihanna or a Britney Spears or whatever. So I said I'm gonna just be the cool songwriter the superhero of the world lay low for a minute and then I'll be a star later. But the song will take you, if you have the song it will take you to all your dreams."
She told the audience, "If you're a songwriter and your song takes off my best advice is to just follow it."

Bumble Networking Night at the Hive on Melrose
Last night I headed down to Melrose Ave for a night of networking and fun at the Bumble Hive in LA. The Bumble hive is a popup installation where bumble users can come to network, collaborate or just get in some blogging. It is like a real life version of the Bumble Networking app and the space is super cool too! I loved all the yellow decorations and fun furniture. When I first arrived I grabbed some of the fun multicolored fortune cookies that were placed around the space. They had pink, blue, and yellow! Of course I got plenty of pink and then grabbed a coke from the bar. I had a great time exploring the rest of the space and even played the fun Bumble themed claw game they had which was so retro and cute! Pretty soon the panel of the night started. The Hive has been hosting guests all month and last night they hosted a Women in Sports themed panel with some amazing and accomplished women from across all areas of the sports industry. It was so interesting for me to learn about this industry since I am not too familiar with it but I had a great time. The panel included Lindsey Amstutz CSO of Fox Sports West, Jennifer van Dijck Chief Strategy Officer and VP of Partnerships for the LA Clippers, and Alex Curry, Sports reporter and TV personality. These women talked about what it takes to make it in the Sports world as a woman and all three of them agreed it wasn't easy but definitely possible!
Lindsay told us the story of how she got into the sports industry saying she managed her college basketball team and eventually ended up at Fox through some connections she made there. She didn't always work in sports though and took several years off to become a lawyer before realizing her true passion was sports. She said, "its never too late to follow your dream!"
She also told us about the exciting initiative she has helped launch at Fox Sports called "She is Fox Sports". The group is for women across the Fox Sports brand working all around the country and they organize events with guest speakers as well as give out awards to honor women for their hard work. This new initiative has really helped to bring together her team according to Lindsey and she is so excited to see how they can grow the idea.
Jennifer van Djick also got involved in the sports industry in college and worked hard to break in. She now gets to work on all kinds of partnerships and marketing initiatives for the LA Clippers. She talked about how she loved that her job included pieces of everything from media to business and of course athletics. She is tasked with growing the Clippers fan base and everyone on the panel agreed how important networking was because they had all run into each other many times throughout their careers.
Alex Curry also spoke about the importance of making contacts with everyone you meet. She told the story of her first on camera gig. It actually came about because she was working on set as an assistant when the producer who she'd been talking to during her time on set, asked her if she wanted to be one of the hostesses since they needed one extra person. After that she continued to get small gigs until she got an agent and manager. She said that many people told her she would never make it as a sports reporter because she didn't look the part or have the experience but she proved them all wrong.
It was a all in all a great night and I got some great tips that could apply to any career! I can't wait to see what else the Bumble BeeHive puts on!

Los Angeles Art Scene: Holiday Gallery reception in Santa Monica
Last Saturday I was invited to attend a gallery opening in Santa Monica at a collection of galleries called Bergamot Station. I wasn't sure what to expect as I had never been to this gallery before, but when I arrived at the event the parking lot was full and the galleries were crowded with people having a great time shopping for art from the amazing artists that were exhibiting. First I headed over to the Schomburg Gallery where I was invited to a holiday reception for the new exhibition by the artist Cindy Ingrahm Keefer. The small gallery is located at the top of a tiny staircase and overlooks the street. A combination of 3D sculptures and paintings decorated the room. The brightly colored abstract works brightened up the space and the intricate detail of the landscapes was captivating. Each piece had a story behind it and many of the works were inspired by the artist’s travels around the world. Any piece from this collection would brighten up a space and I suspect success from this showing.
I interviewed the artist and she explained to me her inspiration for the blue and green abstract; it represents the view she had while flying over the ocean on her way back from Costa Rica.
She painted the picture of Sacre Couer in Paris and said she loved playing with the color scheme.
This picture, a big hit with crowd, depicts a group of Brahminas she observed while in Costa Rica. Many people commented on the interesting personalities in their faces.
I loved the quality of light in this painting and the clouds are beautiful. The luminescence really make the viewer feel like they’re there.
After I had finished looking upstairs I wandered downstairs through some of the other galleries. I was impressed with the variety of work that I saw. There was everything from photography to surrealism and even some interactive art. I really enjoyed the local artists who showcased their California inspired work.
Venice is well known as an art hub here in Los Angeles and there were many interesting pieces from Venice artists throughout the display. I noticed that many artists focused on sunsets or sunrises and also enjoyed the miniatures that the artists featured.
I loved this exhibit by Artist Holly Boruck. Her surrealist-inspired works were a refreshing break from many of the dark modernist styles I saw. Her collection seemed to tell a story and I could tell that each piece had a message behind it.
Next I was invited to try out this psychedelic looking structure. The artist Matt Elson explained that he creates these infinity boxes and each one has a different purpose. This particular one used reflections to layer each of the viewer’s faces over each other. I really enjoyed this interesting interactive art. This is just one example of a larger trend that is happening in the art world today with a push by artists to involve the viewer in their art. I think we will see continue to see more of this type of art as we enter 2016.
Another interesting exhibit I liked was the photography collection. There were many interesting photographs that had been digitally enhanced. I loved the nod to pop art with black and neon pink portrait of Marilyn Monroe. There were also several photographs focused on more modern trends such as the screenshot of this Instagram post with comments. I loved the commentary on our digital world.
I would definitely recommend Bergamot station for anyone who is looking for quality local Los Angles art.
