An Athleisurley Valentine's Day at Ron Robinson in Santa Monica

This Valentine's Day I headed into the stylish Ron Robinson boutique in Santa Monica where the store was celebrating the holiday of love with tons of cute festivities. There were several brands showcasing at the event and the store was filled with Valentine themed decorations and products in every section from home decor to swimwear.

As I entered the store the first brand that I came across was. Lord Jones They made the party extra sweet with some delicious candy samples and their new celebrity esthetician approved moisturizing cream.

Next I headed over to Lotte 99 a mother daughter athliesure brand founded by Sharon and Charlotte Brown. The cutest mother daughter duo who told me all about the inspiration behind their fashion forward loungewear. The brand was especially appropriate considering the event's theme was "love yourself" and the store art featured inspiring messages of self love this year. The clothes on display were also on theme with red and white styles in silk and other soft comfy fabrics. According to the pair, the brand was founded on the idea of living the American dream which can mean being caught off guard and require athliesure wear for any occasion. The designs are all handmade here in LA and some are from up cycled materials keeping the brand ethical and appealing to the millennial consumer. The concept behind these designs was focused on working from home and how fashionable house wear can become a necessity for those working from a home office according to the designers.

I loved getting the chance to practice some #selflove in the form of retail therapy at this event! How did you show yourself some love this valentines day?

Summer is Officially Here and it Looks A Lot Like Baywatch: Exclusive Collection Launch at Ron Robinson in Santa Monica

Today Baywatch, the summer's hottest beach movie, hits theaters and the remake of the 90s phenomenon will have fans dreaming of beautiful California beach days with hot lifeguards Zach Efron and Dwayne the rock Johnson in sexy muscle tees and stylish throwback looks. I got the ultimate taste of Baywatch fashion on Thursday when I attended the exclusive launch the official Baywatch collection at Ron Robinson in Santa Monica.

The collection was created in partnership with Paramount Pictures under a licensing deal for the Baywatch movie and at the same time that we were celebrating the US launch, stars from the film including Efron and The Rock were in Australia promoting the movie overseas. "We are thrilled to have this great design collaboration celebrating the Baywatch movie release,” said LeeAnne Stables, President, Worldwide Marketing Partnerships & Licensing at Paramount Pictures. “The film spotlights the spirit of the beach lifestyle in a fresh and contemporary way – perfectly captured by Ron Robinson and Sugar.” The partnership between Sugar and Paramount resulted in a great personalized collection for fans with many options for customers to pick styles they liked and items that they could enjoy all summer long.
At the event I spoke with reps from Sugar t-shirts the brand behind the fun retro collection as well as a representative from Paramount Pictures Australia who told me that the swimsuit styles in the fun retro collection were inspired by the costumes in the movie. As I wandered around the store checking out all the fun photo ops with the Baywatch decorations I could definitely see the resemblance.
This collection was the first to include menswear for Sugar tees and they did a great job translating their signature sassy style into the menswear collection with funny sayings and graphic designs that will no doubt start a trend for the summer.
My personal favorite of the womenswear looks was this cute bodysuit inspired by the signature red Baywatch swimsuit which became an icon of SoCal beach styles in the 90s.
Guests had a great time in the store checking out all the beach themed products to go with the collection and summer vibes were everywhere as many showed up wearing pieces from the collection.

Check out my article for E! News about the revival of the Baywatch movie here and don't forget to check out the collection online so you can show up to the new movie in theaters now in style!

Loved my cute little makeup bag form the event it was perfect for a beach day!

A Sweet Mothers Day Celebration with CoachArt org x Natasha Wagner atRon Robinson in Santa Monica

This weekend I attended the CoachArt x Natasha Wagner event at the Ron Robinson boutique in Santa Monica. The event was sponsored by Ron Robinson and the CoachArt foundation - a charitable foundation that works with local artists to provide one- on-one training and group classes for children with chronic illnesses. The foundation kicked off it's partnership with actress and local community theater leader, Natasha Wagner, who is also the daughter of Hollywood legend Natalie Woods, last year at their annual gala. She was honored with one of their awards and has been working with them ever since. Since then she has been working with the organization to create theater and improv classes for CoachArt children in communities around the LA area. Natasha launched her Santa Monica program at Ron Robinson this Mother's Day. As part of the event the store even offered special deals and a fun shopping experience for the mom's who brought their kids to the event. Natasha celebrated the day as well with a special on her own signature fragrance line inspired by her mom Natalie Wood; 20% of proceeds went to the CoachArt foundation. Natasha was so excited to see such a full house turn out for her theater class; the kids who participated were having a blast learning improv techniques. She made sure everyone was included and came up with fun activities for the whole group. The event also included snacks and dessert provided by a local catering company that specializes in all organic and sugar free creations. The class was an exciting opportunity for the children who participate in CoachArt programs because childhood chronic illnesses can often prevent kids from joining many activities in their school, especially if they attend public schools who already have a limited selection of arts activities available. For these children a chance to get to know new friends and feel accomplished at something is such an important opportunity since they can often feel out of place at public schools who aren't equipped to offer them alternative activities to choose from. Choices are often limited for children who are required to attend public schools and giving a variety of choices of activities and learning environments for kids to choose from based on their needs is something many children could benefit from. CoachArt and it's volunteer coaches such as Natasha are providing a much needed place for these kids to get exposure to new activities in the arts, which for many may even turn into a possible career. The fun day continued with more arts and crafts provided by CoachArt volunteers. I headed over to check out Natasha's new fragrance line and spoke with her about her inspiration, her mom and silver screen glamour girl Natalie Wood. According to Natasha she wanted to create something that was classic while still being fresh and light. She said, "I wanted to create something fresh and accessible but still have gardenia at the heart."
The fragrance appealed to fans of all ages and captured her mother's memory with notes of gardenia, her mother's favorite flower, and orange blossom which Natasha said always surrounded her childhood home. The fragrance captures the timelessness of her mother's legacy and according to Natasha one her favorite memories of Natalie Wood. On her mother's birthday Natasha remembers getting hundreds of gardenias sent to the house and the air being filled with the refreshing scent for days afterwards. She spent months developing the fragrance and learned about the process of creating a perfume at a company in upstate New York, a process she said she really enjoyed. "What I  learned is, it's not just one or two fragrances that create the scent. It's like wine or like cooking,"  she said of the yearlong project. According to Natasha she is a very decisive person and she knew instantly what she liked and didn't like. She wanted to stay away from anything too strong and "perfumey" but was incredibly happy with the final product once it was finally finished. It has inspired her to create more fragrances and she has plans to introduce more to the line in the future. She is currently working on a rose inspired fragrance to add to the line next.

Ron Robinson United State of Fashion Event Highlights Small Businesses and Female Designers

On Thursday April 13 I headed over to the Ron Robinson boutique on Melrose Ave for the United State of Fashion event where the store showcased an impressive collection of made in USA brands for every type of product from beauty to jewelry. L.A. is a hub for start-up fashion brands and the expansive apparel industry in California made up of small business owners attracts talent from all over the country. According to the White House website small businesses account for 50% of all private sector jobs in America and the prospects for growth are continuing to expand as confidence in the economy grows despite an uncertain retail climate. The designers who showed up to the event to talk to customers about their brands were real life examples and many even brought one of their employees with them to help out. Since the average manufacturer in America has an estimated 50 employees or less optimism for entrepreneurs who want to establish American operations is on the rise as Washington highlights new trade and economic policies during National small business week.

I entered the boutique in their beauty department where they were introducing products from the Apothia beauty line. The line was developed and made in America and includes make-up, hair care and, skin care products. The reps were excited to help customers discover new products and everyone was enjoying getting pampered in the store with hair styling and make-up samples.
After getting my hair done and eating a chocolate cupcake I continued to the rest of the store where two jewelry designers were showing off their creations. Both designers were inspired by their travels around the world and had found creative ways to incorporate their internationally sourced gems and materials into their products for authentic and personalized pieces.

The first brand Kenton Michael designs was a husband and wife team based in Southern California where they design and hand make all their pieces. The fun surf wear inspired style bracelets they had on display were each unique and the two explained that they had included recycled beads they found as well as hand carved beads they purchased from a village in Africa through a personal friend. Well researched sourcing was an important part of their design process and each piece had a different story to tell.

Luna Sky was the second jewelry brand and Samantha the young owner and designer came out to talk with me about her beautiful gold and silver pieces featuring crystals and colorful gemstones. Customers were intrigued by the delicate designs sparkling on display. Sourcing was also an important part of designing for Samantha who has her studio in downtown Los Angeles central to the LA fashion and jewelry districts. She has traveled around the world to gem shows collecting crystals and precious gems that inspire her but, Los Angeles is still home.
She said,"I love having my studio in LA and working with my team rather than not knowing who's making the products." According to Samantha she was inspired to create her brand because she feels that jewelry is such a personal investment that people will be putting on their body or giving as gifts. She told me that right now instead of seasonal collections Luna Sky focuses on applying their philosophy of transferring positive energy through all of their pieces into each product in order to create a personal connection for their customers. The young brand has been steadily growing since Samantha originally founded it and she has continued to work hard at getting her name out there. She is always thinking of ways to best serve her customers and share the Luna Sky message and has a fun and informational blog on her website talking about tips for wearing jewelry as well as information on the history and meaning behind different gems and jewelry styles in her collections.

Next I stopped by the accessories department where milliner Gladys Tamez was talking to customers about her popular Hollywoodland collection which you can read more about in my interview with Gladys on the launch of her collection here.

The last designer I spoke to was Lina of Bandit and Cash who was there presenting her festival season collection of decorative vintage tees and tanks. The festival season collection was a collaboration between Lina and Sugar, a made in USA t-shirt and lounge wear brand based in Miami. The Bandit and Cash brand is a true fashion success story. According to Lina she went to school for fashion merchandising and has been working as a stylist in Miami for Sugar t-shirts and other brands for the past several years. She has always loved finding vintage t-shirts and in her spare time she would embellish or rework them into modern styles she liked. She often wore her creations to work and got compliments on them from co-workers. One day the designers at Sugar asked her where she got them and after telling them she made them they asked her to bring in ideas for a new festival collection they wanted to develop. She quickly created a selection of designs she had in mind and after presenting the collection to Sugar began creating the first collection of Bandit and Cash. Lina has been hard at work ever since and hand embellished over 700 pieces for the collection which is now sold at department stores such as Nordstrom's after launching in LA. She told me that she loved creating the collection and was inspired to make it more personal and decorative because she noticed there were too many plain one size fits all style tees in the fast fashion festival collections she had seen.
Lina said she made sure to design for all different body types offering some of her favorite looks like side cut outs and open back styles as well as long flowy outfits to pair with leggings. She also told me she wanted to make sure the styles would endure through the summer so that people could wear the pieces all throughout festival season rather than just for one event.

Small businesses like Bandit and Cash are an important part of the fashion industry in the U.S. because designers like Lina who are driven to create pieces based off their passions are often the people best suited to create solutions for customers with similar interests and experiences.

It was so great to see all the fun looks from the new collection on display around the store and customers enjoyed the event finding new brands and enthusiastic designers.

CdM Fashion Careers: Gladys Tamez Milliner to the Stars

Today I interviewed Gladys Tamez at the Ron Robinson store on Melrose Avenue where she was launching her new SS17 collection “Hollywoodland” Gladys Tamez owns her own millinery studio in downtown Los Angeles where she creates hats of every style by hand. She is inspired by the European tradition and craftsmanship but, the designer ultimately has a unique LA spin on her designs adding wild prints and bright colors to her elegant designs. While her designs are unique Gladys herself is exactly what you would expect from a milliner, never still she passionately described her collection to me in her exotic accent all while styling customers and merchandising the hats on display. Gladys is most well known for designing Lady Gaga’s famous pink hat that is now the icon of the singers “Joanne” world tour. Lady Gaga’s favorite color is pink after all and according to Gladys of the 60 some hats she has in her collection the pink one still remains one of her top favorites. The designer told me that she loved designing for Lady Gaga and it was an amazing experience. She has since gained several more high profile clients in both the entertainment and fashion industries. She offers private consulting and custom styling in her downtown studio where she also designs for her collection.
As the accessories market grows and customers are favoring high quality unique pieces, hats have made a revival in retail stores and become a staple item for fashionistas everywhere. The designer has moved into more commercial designs since her rise to fame and has started to create more retail collections for high end boutiques. The Hollywoodland collection is sold exclusively at Ron Robinson stores as it fits perfectly with the stores’ Los Angeles heritage and was an immediate hit among the store’s customers. Gladys found inspiration for the collection in old Hollywood celebrities such as Grace Kelly and Marlin Brando and each hat in the line bears the name of its inspiration.

The Grace Kelly hat pictured in the center of the display
The collection is truly an homage to the silver screen and the lookbook even features the son of Salvatore Ferragamo as a model posing in black and white glamour shots. The designer is constantly on the move working on her next big project and growing her successful business, proof that there is always room for new talent, even in an unlikely and traditionally male dominated career such as a milliner.

YoungArts x Swarovski Capsule Collection Debuts at Ron Robinson on Melrose

Today models, actors, and designers gathered at the Fred Segal Café on Melrose Avenue for the launch of the YoungArtsxSwarovski capsule collection at Ron Robinson. The collection is going to be available in international locations and is scheduled to go to international fashion hot spots such as Paris and Milan but has made its debut right here in Los Angeles. The collection will benefit the YoungArts foundation which is a charity organization that provides mentorship and scholarships to the top talent 18 and under in artistic fields such as architecture and music.

Dee Dee Sides the Sr. Development Director for YoungArts also attended the event and I spoke to her about the program. She told me that the Swarovski Atelier collection is sponsored by Swarovski a Young Arts partner and designed by Khirma New York. The collection celebrates the launch of YoungArts fashion platform which will be geared towards mentoring young designers and providing them with exposure to the industry through the organizations partners. The collection fits well with the YoungArts initiative according to DeeDee because it is designed by a young up and coming designer herself and is very artsy to represent the program’s focus on creative industries.

Young Arts is one of the many programs trying to fill the need for mentorship and exposure for youth interested working in creative industries. For many young people in the US, access to technical training or information about careers in artistic fields isn’t part of their education, as there has been a big push for STEM initiatives and college prep programs in the high schools while the arts have been left with little funding. The YoungArts program often find the talent they support through contests where kids can enter their work for a chance to win one of the scholarships and mentoring programs since they are focused on providing resources to the top 1% of talent in the US.

I also interviewed the young designer of the capsule collection which included all types of handbags encrusted with Swarovski crystals in different ways. According to Khirma, the young New York based handbag designer, she was excited to be a part of tshis collection. She relates to the YoungArts initiative because after finishing her undergraduate degree she was on her way to law school when she realized she wanted to be a designer and she believes that ages 15-18 are often some of the most critical years for figuring out what you want to do. She enjoyed working with the Swarovski crystals as a medium because the Swarovski brand is all about texture and that is something her own handbag line also embraces. She said, “the designs are all named after women I have met who inspired me because when you think about what makes a person beautiful it’s all the different textures and layers coming together.” She wanted to represent that in her designs as well and played with different ways to incorporate the crystals such as embroidery and crystal encrusted clasps. The Khirma line is all about being fearless and feminine and making it all happen inspired by Khirma’s own experiences.
The collection was definitely dazzling and the bags could be seen sparkling from across the store drawing interest from customers.

It was great to see so many people coming out to enjoy lunch on the café patio on the sunny Los Angeles day in support of young people and creative industry.
