New Designers at NYFW To Watch This Season

While NYFW has been back from Covid for two official seasons now this may be the first season many people feel is a true New York Fashion Week experience. CFDA CEO Steven Kolb opened fashion week on Thursday night at Gracie Mansion and according to an article on FashionNetwork.com he stated, “This season is about power and action. Of course the pandemic meant a gradual return but this is finally full on fashion week.”

But for many in the industry fashion week is full of new faces and new challenges this season and rather than feeling a familiar return there is a new energy in the air. In an exclusive interview industry veteran Bridget Foley who previously worked as Executive Editor of WWD for over a decade stated, “New York fashion week has always been about finding new designers and new talent but I think what we’re seeing this season is a revalidation.” Industry experts have noted that this season in many cases reflects a selection of new designers and up and coming talent that has not been offered in past years. Some notable up and coming brands to watch include Deity New York, Fe Noel, Puppets and Puppets, Wiederhoeft and more. Foley noted that while it can be very difficult for new designers to pull together a show we are seeing a revalidation on the promise of what new talent can bring to the industry.

Foley also said,“The fashion industry has a sense of community which is very important. And we are seeing many new faces in the audience with influencers, social media, etc. which is great. The fashion industry is one of the most kinetic industries in the world and has continued to evolve.” Among those new faces includes New York State Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Adams of NYC who have both been spotted attending events this season and last season. This in itself speaks to the revalidation of the fashion show as well as this specific fashion week. Foley said, “I think that we’ve realized we can’t take it for granted. Fashion is an enormous industry that accounts for many jobs and millions of dollars. In NYC it’s very diverse and we’re seeing more points of view. It’s very important for the people in power to recognize that.” She went on to say that she has noticed a renewed focus on the importance of supporting new talent with the potential to create powerful and successful businesses and give opportunities to new designers and brands.

While new faces are one side of the coin the lack of some familiar faces from the scene should also be noted. Some brands who were fixtures on the NYFW calendar for years such as Ralph Lauren (who instead chose to show in LA this October) are not showing this season.

When discussing the changing dynamics of this week’s lineup Foley said, “We’re seeing a clarification of what the fashion show means.” She noted that many brands have shown an increased selectivity when choosing to participate in fashion week or not saying, “Even the most low key show is very very expensive to put on. Some brands have realized the money could be better spent on other things.”

She added, “I love fashion shows. But it’s true that sometimes it’s not the best way to communicate the aesthetic for that brand or collection.” With consumers tightening their belts and many brands still rebounding from Covid losses budgets have become a deciding factor in many brands decision to put on a live show. Foley noted, “Some brands realize they just can’t afford it.” Covid has forced a collective step back and offered all of us the chance to evaluate what is truly important in our lives and what we want to spend our energy on and this is true for the fashion industry as well.

Of course many fan favorites are still showing this season. Foley pointed out that for many designers fashion week creates a creative rhythm that is hard to replace. She said. “Many designers design for the show and that’s something that plays into it.”

However, if bigger brands are generally cutting back on fashion show spending, how can new brands with even tighter budgets afford to participate?

Foley said, “It’s so hard for young designers to get established. Staging a fashion show is enormously expensive.” She added that new designers also must consider if they will stand out against major brands and get noticed or if they will be lost in the chaos of fashion week news. In order to put on a successful show designers must pull together sponsors for hair and makeup, find venues, and hire models and support staff.

According to designer Renee Bishop of the up and coming brand Deity New York putting together this season’s show was According to designer Renee Bishop of the up and coming brand Deity New York putting together this season’s show was not an easy road but she was ultimately able to create the event she had envisioned.  She recounted the experience of putting together her first full fledged runway show in contrast with last season’s presentation format in which the clothes were displayed on mannequins saying, “With pressure comes diamonds, and that’s how I feel about putting together my second runway collection, after presenting last season in a presentation format.  My team and I started back in June, right after we presented the Deity resort collection.  Spring / Summer looks great…filled with texture and color; it’s this mix of the natural and manufactured. I can’t wait for it to be in the runway! New York is so wonderful to present in for all its diversity. New York Fashion Week is for everyone and that makes it all the more special.

Despite the challenges the industry has faced navigating the post covid fashion week landscape many are still excited for the return to in person events. Foley said, “It’s interesting that for all of the alternatives no group of options has emerged as a really sound alternative to fashion week.” For Foley there is no other moment like a fashion show. She feels that whether it is in person or on a screen it is a truly powerful experience for brands and audience alike to feel the magic of a live fashion show and presenting a new collection for the first time. She said she feels it can often be the strongest way to communicate a collection’s aesthetic.

One of the ways fashion week has been adapting to these new norms is by creating more involved partnerships with sponsors. One example is UPS who has partnered with fashion week the past two seasons by highlighting small designers from minority communities. Designers and UPS have worked together to create new ways of partnering up. Angelo Baque streetwear designer and founder of Awake New York said that his vision is to create new norms for corporate partners and ensure that giving back to the community is the first priority.

According to UPS brand representative Carlos Cuerto, "UPS is ecstatic about the opportunity to support New York Fashion Week. We are developing a very strong partnership and committed to the development of fashion designers and the fashion industry as a whole. UPS is a catalyst of their growth as well because once they scale and you know designers, launch their brands and commercialize their products, UPS wants to serve as a partner when they ship it, you know, and they conquer new markets domestically and internationally. UPS wants to be part of that growth. We are committed to the support of underrepresented minorities and we know that fashion serves as an avenue to access a lot of diversity like latinx, women, also African American owned businesses so we want to make sure that we serve as a catalyst for their growth."

It will be interesting to see how these partnerships and runway shows evolve as fashion designers navigate this new landscape and more exciting developments continue to grow!

New year New Apartment! Check out my apt tour video!

This year on NewYears Eve I moved in to a brand new apartment! My first adult apartment that I decorated myself! I found tons of awesome DIY projects and organizing tips on Pinterest and I am sharing some of my favorites in this blog post! You can watch my apartment tour video here to see how it all came together!

Easy Picture Set Using Scrapbook Paper

I love this project because finding pictures that match your decor and color scheme can be extremely challenging not to mention expensive! I found 3 pieces of scrapbook paper in similar patterns and the colors that I wanted and used them to create a set of 3 pictures for my bedroom. The paper was 99 cents each and the 12x12 frames were $10 each so in total it was only $33! Check out how it came out below! For mine, I went with a French decorative theme and chose some corresponding patterns and then hung mine in an ascending line. You could also do 4 and put them together in a square which I think looks really nice as well! I added borders to mine and depending on the pattern and theme in your room you could as well. All these items can be found in the scrapbooking section at Micheal's or Hobby lobby!

Kate Spade Gallery Wall for Your Home Office

I found this idea on Pinterest and loved it since I am a huge Kate Spade fan! I made all the posters myself using more scrapbook glitter paper and then sketched out this cool fashion design as well. This project is easy, just find some inspiring quotes that will motivate you in your work space and then you can design some posters. Polka dot or floral patterned paper is another good material to use to complete the theme. Here's mine as well as some other versions from Pinterest.

Pink Paris Bathroom

I decided to go with a pink Paris bathroom since I already had pink towels. I made the artwork and then used an Eiffel Tower figurine and a betsy Johnson shower curtain to complete the look. I made this poster using canvas and glitter. I traced the letters so they would be even and used one of my favorite Christian Dior quotes, "Pink is the color of happiness". For the second picture I used a calendar photo from an old calender I had. It was pretty easy, I just had to find a frame that was the right size and the photo looks professional but I didn't have to pay for it! The soap dish I made at color Me Mine!

Cherry Kitchen

Of course I had to include my Cherry kitchen on this blog since it is all about cherries around here. I found this beautiful tablecloth at a farmers market in LA. The red chair cushions are from bed bath and beyond and my dish towel is another handmade item! I just attached a piece of cherry patterned cloth to the towel for decoration. I also created this watercolor cherry painting to add some artwork to the dining room.

The Top Menswear Trends from the Hollywood Experts at Simply OC

StyleWeek OC kicked off at the beautiful Fashion Island Mall where celebrity stylists and fashion icons fashion blogger J Fig, Doug McLaughlin of RHOC, and celebrity stylist Ashley Weston came out for a Menswear panel to discuss the latest trends for the upcoming fall season. These top style industry leaders dished on the latest trends that no one else will see until they hit the red carpet later this year so remember you heard it here first! Ashley Weston Hollywood menswear stylist for some of the hottest A-list actors like Harrison Ford, Chris Pratt, Kevin Hart and more told us about her tips for creating a sleek and polished red carpet look.

The panelists talked about their favorite trends of the season and shared the daring looks they predicted would be on the rise in 2019. They all agreed that yellow is the color of the moment and loved adding pops of the bright hue to lighten up any look. Ashley Weston also recommended mixing houndstooth prints into your wardrobe this fall because the classic fall print is making a comeback. She also said that girls could use some of these tips too because going for the masculine look for women is always a great way to mix it up with an oversized suit or a shirt and tie look.

When each of the panelists were asked what their favorite piece was for menswear they all had interesting essential items for the stylish man. Doug McLaughlin started off telling the audience about his favorite leather jacket. He said the jacket was something he wanted to pass on to his sons because he felt that it was the perfect addition to any man's wardrobe and was a great nostalgic piece to be used again and again.

Ashley said she always recommended her clients own a pair of nice loafers because they could be worn at any occasion and dressed up or down.

Daniel Musto added that sunglasses were another essential he loved to have in his closet and J Fig said he couldn't live without a soft comfortable t-shirt. These essentials are all great tips for creating the basis for a stylish wardrobe. The panelists also talked about their favorite way to elevate their looks. Doug McLaughlin shared his favorite tips for looking sharp on date night saying, "Recently I wore a light cream colored suit for date night with Lydia and she loved it because usually I tend to go for the darker colored suits." Apparently his lighter color palette was a big it with his wife and its something he'll definitely be bringing back.

Ashley Weston recommended several tips for looking red carpet ready saying, "I always tell my clients never let your socks show!" She also recommends having one good tailored suit because fit can really make or break a look.

The panel discussion turned to the current state of menswear as the panelists talked about their favorite brands which ranged everywhere from Suit Supply to Rodd and Gunn. The panelists talked about how much the men's fashion industry has grown and changed in the past few years and Ashley Weston said, "I feel like I can tell my clients to take risks now and go with a patterned shirt they might never wear or add some bright colors and they always end up loving it because people think men's fashion is boring and just the same old thing over and over again but it doesn't have to be."

All in all the panel was very informative and even I got some great style tips from it!

CdM Fashion Careers: Cassandra Volpe and the Future of Social Media Marketing for Fashion

Cassandra Volpe – Account Director at Adaptly

What is your job title and what does a typical day in the life look like?

Account Director (Social Media) at Adaptly

A typical day includes meetings with my internal team and clients to discuss campaign performance and future strategy, putting together media plans and recommendations, working to optimize campaigns in real time, and being sure to take time to keep up with the latest in the industry.

Do you have any advice for someone hoping to get into this field?

Look to get in the door with an agency or API partner who works across multiple social platforms and verticals. Ultimately, this will set you up for several different paths as you discover more about what it is that draws you to this kind of work.
Once you’ve landed a position be a self-starter and a go-getter. If you don’t know the answer to something, research it. Participate in webinars, read articles and blogs written by those in the field, keep up with industry news etc. This will put you a step ahead in this fast changing industry.

What is the biggest difference you’ve noticed between traditional fashion and retail marketing and social media marketing for this industry?

In traditional media, there is often a lot of emphasis put on using elevated and artistic creative. Using print as an example, these often have an editorial vibe and blend in well with the pages of Vogue or Elle magazines.
When we think about how users interact with social media, the behavior is very different. Users are consuming media quickly, on mobile devices, anywhere they are. Creative in these environments need to stand out and very clearly communicate what they are showing in order to have a lasting impact on the user.
Where in print, black and white imagery may have given a sophisticated vibe, users will likely scroll right by that on a news feed filled with color. In television, you may have the users undivided attention for 45 seconds or more but on Social you have 5 seconds to grab someones attention and can only expect to keep it for 15 seconds – so it is important to grab their attention with movement and color and to say what needs to be said quickly and playfully.

How does an awareness campaign differ from a campaign directed at purchasing a specific item online?

Awareness campaigns aim to generate brand buzz and drive your brands narrative. These campaigns aim to show what you have to offer and help introduce your brand or aid in staying top of mind with your audience. Brand marketing may influence sales, but it does not necessarily increase them.
An ad with an objective of selling a specific item would be considered Direct Response. With Direct response your one goal is to drive sales.

Do you ever create campaigns to drive in store traffic?

Driving in-store traffic is a huge focus for many retailers as more and more shopping moves online. Fortunately, there is still a tremendous benefit to the in-store experience of communicating with a real
person who knows the brand as well as seeing and feeling a product in person. In order to effectively drive foot traffic, this in-store experience should be a focus of your advertisements.

Does your messaging differ by social platform?

The message does and should differ by social platform. Again, think of how the social platform is used and how you can provide value in that context. On Pinterest, users love to see “how-to’s” so showing how to wear an item multiple ways works well. On Instagram, you may use visually beautiful content in relatable outdoor settings.

What do you see for the future of social media marketing in the fashion industry and specifically branded content?

I see things getting a lot more complex with the Virtual Reality on the near horizon. One day, users will be able to virtually hold or try on an item before they order online.

What is the one piece of advice you give to all your clients?

Always be testing! In an ever changing market, what works today might fail tomorrow. In order to succeed you must be dynamic and willing to divert from the original strategy.

Check Out my Article for Hollywood Glam Magazine: Audrina Patridge Talks About Creating Prey Swim and Summer Trends at Simply LA

"You always have to be ahead of the trends or create the trends.” - Audrina Patridge

Image via Instagram @audrinapatridge

On Saturday July 15, the Simply LA fashion and beauty conference kicked off on the rooftop of The Grove shopping center in Beverly Hills. The fun filled day included celebrity guest appearances, panels, and free hair and make-up samples from the up and coming brands exhibiting at the event. For many guests seeing some of their favorite brands and discovering new products was the highlight of the event. One of the brands exhibiting was Prey Swim, created by reality star and model Audrina Patridge, who attended the event as a panelist and exhibitor for her new line. The actress was so excited to share in an interview about her experience designing the line.

According to Audrina the process has given her a new respect for the fashion industry and her line focuses on customizable pieces for her customers. She takes some of her inspiration from the type of swimwear that she would’ve liked as a teen and has created swim sets that girls can mix and match in different sizes according to their body type. She also had some reversible pieces in her collection as well to give customers even more options for colors and patterns.
This season’s collection was all about high waisted pieces and fun prints for customers to create their own look.

Audrina talked about her favorite trends of the summer saying, “I love all the high waisted, I love that all the 90s grunge with the 70s are in and that people are mixing the two eras and creating their own style.”

And for the SoCal native, the trends from the beaches of LA were another big hit for her summer style inspiration.
She said, “One-piece bikinis are trending, they’re huge! One piece and high waisted, especially with Baywatch, like I’ve been seeing a lot of red bikinis and yellow. And all the 80s high cut bikinis are back in…you know, it’s a circle.”

The actress was getting in on the revival and, wearing a red patterned jumper, told me about her own style saying, “My mom sees how I dress and says you look like I did when I was in my 20s!”

She also talked about beauty saying, “I love that all the natural make-up is coming back and all the natural hair because it’s just natural beauty and, it’s so much easier to get ready!”

And saving time and energy is always on her mind since she’s been working on her line and keeping up with the fast pace of the fashion industry.

She told me, “I feel like in the fashion industry you never really get a chance to have a break it’s like non- stop. You always have to be ahead of the trends or create the trends.”

But the hard work has paid off for Audrina, who talked about her upcoming plans saying, “It’s fun. We’re showing at Miami Swim Week next Friday so we’ve been working on showing our two collections, casting models and just preparing for it. And then, after that we’re working on spring and summer.”

Check Out my article on the MTV Awards Gifting Suite in Beverly Hillsfor Hollywood Glam Magazine!

The SLS Hotel presented the MTV Awards Gifting Lounge event in Beverly Hills on Friday April 7. The gifting lounge included vendors and designers from several innovative companies from around the country. Celebrities and media attended the event before the MTV Movie and TV Awards to get in the spirit of the event and check out the interesting products. The event took place in the courtyard of the SLS hotel on a sunny day in Los Angeles and the space was filled with colorful displays from vendors.

There were several fashion and jewelry companies that came to exhibit and show off their products. Many of the designers who traveled from around the country showed off handmade products they invented and created in their homes or with friends. One designer, JA designer collections, traveled all the way from Maine to show off her necklaces made from cloth and Bamboo. According to designer and owner Jane Arey she wanted to design something that could be worn several different ways but, didn’t want to work with scarves because she wanted her product to be versatile in many seasons. The necklaces made from materials such as polyester blend and bamboo were a big hit with guest s who enjoyed trying out the different styles. They came in several colors and the designer showed off how they could be styled into knots, twists and layers.
Another innovative jewelry designer was Caravan jewelers from Sedona Arizona. The designer and owner told me that she had originally started out a s affine jeweler but during the recession wanted to expand into more affordable jewelry. That led to the creation of her line of silk jewelry. She dies the silk strips in many different vibrant colors which she said are meant to represent gem colors so customers can still have a piece of ruby red or emerald green jewelry. The strips can be combined with a variety of bronze clasps to make necklaces and bracelets and pendants can also be added to the necklaces for an added sparkle. The collection was reminiscent of the desert vibes of Sedona and perfect for a relaxing vacation look.
The vendors ranged from casual and fun jewelry to more high end as well with an exhibition from Jewels by Durani which is based out of Los Angeles. The designer explained that her and her friend created the brand with pop culture inspired pieces. The jewelry was made out of a sterling silver base with gold or rose gold platings. The popular designs included necklaces with arrow pendants and another design with Arabic writing. It was a very popular booth.
Another pop culture inspired brand was Whimzey t-shirts. The line of sassy and girly t-shirts is based in Georgia and the designer said she often gets inspiration form the girls who work in her office. She had several collection including a southern inspired line as well as a line based on movies and TV shows. One of the most popular shirts among guests was the Flawless shirt which read, “Flawless n. a person who embraces their flaws and loves themselves”

There were also several beauty products and the Nail Alliance took their inspiration from Los Angeles when they created the Baywatch Nail polish collection full of bright California colors inspired by the movie remake coming out this Spring. The 90s revival trend is definitely still going strong and has even made its way into nail polish!

Other popular vendors included the Jessica Simpson children’s line, Luseta hair and beauty products Townsley Girl Cosmetics and the popular celebrity health food company Modus whose clients include names such as Carrie Underwood and pro-athletes. The event was full all day and guests enjoyed trying new products and taking their picture on the red carpet.
